Cosmic Life was honored as one of only 17 images in the category of Nature, to be published in the Special Issue of American Photo magazine's 3rd Annual Images of the Year Competition for 2008.   This year's contest topped all others in the number of entries, which came from around the globe.

Field Notes:

This is a 45 minute long exposure at night.  I used a flashlight to paint-with-light the front of the scene for a couple of minutes, then I went back and around behind the tree and sat by my small campfire - that's causing the beautiful golden glow!  After 30 minutes or so, the near-full moon rose adding more light to the scene.  15 minutes later, I stopped the exposure.  So this photograph is four light sources - starlight, moonlight, flashlight, and campfire light.
