THE STORY BEHIND: HIDDEN DEPTHS

HIDDEN DEPTHS | FAR AWAY ISLE PORTFOLIO

Sometimes the world delivers an unexpected image in a familiar place.

In Hawaii, our tides stay fairly demure compared to much of the world. Because we are situated close to the equator, it is typical for us to experience only a 5-foot change from low to high tide.

I have been coming to this beach south of Lahaina for many years, and it’s rare to see the ocean rise high enough to gather in pools like you see in this image. Having such a vibrant and magical sunset happen at the same time felt like artful serendipity.

If photography has taught me one thing, it is to seize the moment. The tides and sun slipped out of sight within an hour and I was grateful to experience such newness in a place I am so accustomed to.

When all of the elements converged here, I was simply inspired. I love the way the dark tree helps balance the bright colors in the background and how the reflection adds depth to both the sky and branches.

This photograph reminds me to pay attention - to look out for those fleeting moments when the world gives you unexpected visions.
