FAQ’s - VENICE
If you are considering joining me for one of my photography workshops and have read through the descriptions, you may still be left with a few questions. Below are some of the most frequently asked. If your question is still unanswered, there's a form at the bottom of the page - please don't hesitate to contact me.
Why should I take a workshop with you?
Photography workshops should be sanctuaries of learning and inspiration, not just excursions led by artists. As your guide, my mission extends beyond showcasing mesmerizing locations; it is to illuminate the path of discovery and mastery in photography.
My approach is grounded in the philosophy that a great photographer does not necessarily make a great teacher. Thus, I dedicate myself to being both. My focus is unwavering in nurturing your talent, sharing wisdom that transcends technical skill, and sparking the creativity that fuels your passion. It's about imparting the nuances that transform good shots into great art.

When do I pay?
A 50% deposit is required to secure your spot. I recommend you make your payment at your earliest convenience to secure your spot. I confirm every payment. Once I receive your deposit or full amount, I’ll email you and confirm your space.
If you haven't received an email confirmation from me within 48 hours, then there may have been an issue with your checkout - email me with your order number and we will finalize the order.
What camera gear specifically is best? Should I bring every lens I own?
You certainly don't need to bring everything you own. It’s just more to carry! But, we can discuss this 1:1 after you book and I can help you get your kit dialed for this specific workshop.
By default - I’d suggest the equivalent to a 16-35mm and 24-70mm (or 24-105mm). Although a 70-200 can come in handy at times, you have to decide if you want to lug it around all week.
A stable tripod is a necessity.
As is a cable release. Don’t forget this. A large focus to my workshops are on long exposure and so a tripod is important, but so is a cable release - preferably a wired kind, not the wireless remote kind. Without a cable release, your camera likely limits you to 30 second exposures. With it, I will teach you to do 2+ minute long exposures. These are specific to camera so I can’t supply these. Go to B&H and search for: “(YOUR CAMERA BRAND) Cable Release”. Let me know if you have any questions.
If you do not already have Neutral Density filters, let me know and I will help you determine what you need. I have a relationship with NISI filters, so may even be able to save you a few dollars.
In some cases, I may also suggest renting an item if your kit is missing something critical.
What do I need to bring in addition to camera gear?
Regarding footwear - You will want extremely comfortable shoes ideal for walking 10,000+ steps a day, and being on your feet for a few hours at a time. Waterproof sneakers are always a good idea for this type of workshop - they keep your feet warmer and dry during adverse conditions, and can be easily cleaned back in the room each night. Hoka, On-Running, and Salomon are a few options to explore.
Regarding Venice weather in November - low temps will be 40°f and highs will be in the mid 50’s, with potential for drizzle and misty mornings. Learning some warm layers with an outer raincoat is optimal. I also never leave home without a small umbrella for both shooting in the rain and wind, and this small Blunt umbrella is easy to pack and travel with, and is crazy strong.
Should I bring a laptop?
This is up to you. For my personal photography travels, I typically don’t travel with a laptop and wait until I get home to upload and work on images. In this case, I will bring my computer and we will have some sessions where we look at things in the digital darkroom together. So, you can keep things light and simply observe these sessions, then work through them together in our 1:1 post workshop Zoom session, or you can bring your laptop and work along the way. Either way will work fine.
What are the essentials for the landscape photographer?
A camera with manual controls, preferably a minimum lens range of 16-35mm and 24-70mm, a stable tripod, a cable release, a few ND filters, and a bag to hold the items. This is close to "the essentials". I'd suggest that you wait to make any purchases until we communicate. One of the things that I really enjoy is being able to help others NOT make bad purchases. I've learned through trial and error and have made plenty of bad purchases through the years, so now give good advice when it comes to gear purchases.
What if we have to cancel due to weather? What about severe weather?
The weather in Venice in November is quite “predictable”. The morning fog is what we hope to encounter. And rain just requires a bit more care of gear, but can be wonderful for photographic atmosphere. Also, for landscape photographers, weather is often part of the experience. It’s not uncommon that the "poor" weather turns out to be the best light and lead to the most compelling photograph. You can't be quick to throw in the towel and quit because of poor looking weather.
What is the time-frame for the workshop? Will we shoot sunrise?
Yes, we will meet pre-sunrise for 6 of the mornings and shoot the early morning light. Then, we may opt for a breakfast break before re-meeting to shoot through the remainder of the day and through sunset. You will have 2 break sessions worked into the week in the case you want to explore museums, rest, or work on your images. There also may be an impromptu night shoot or two for those interested in staying out late. Personally, I like to burn the candle at both ends during photo trips, but I am also sensitive to workshop participants energy levels and make sure to work in enough rest and time to rejuvenate.
