REMNANTS OF YESTERDAY
REMNANTS OF YESTERDAY
Honshu, Japan
In the heart of Japan, this image captures the beauty and simplicity of a traditional way of life. The photograph depicts hundreds of poles standing tall in the water, each reaching skyward with a timeless poise. The long exposure softens the surface of the water and the clouds above, creating a serene and peaceful scene.
The poles, used in a method of fishing known as "shamoji-gari," symbolize the simplicity and harmony of nature. This traditional method of fishing passed down from generation to generation, is a reminder of the natural cycle of life and the importance of living in harmony with nature. The fisherman places hundreds of these poles in the water, with the baits suspended just above the lakebed, to catch sweetfish (Ayu) in the lake.
The photograph invites the viewer to reflect on the beauty and simplicity of life, reminding us that sometimes the most profound truths are found in the simplest things. It's a reminder to live in harmony with nature and to find peace in the present moment - that the beauty of life is located in the ability to navigate and find peace within that complexity.
