MY ONLY SURVIVING PIECE OF FILM

A Symbol of Resilience and Artistic Discovery

Twenty years ago, under the vast night sky of the Grand Canyon, I captured an image that would forever change how I see the world. It wasn’t just another photograph—it was a moment of pure discovery. The blending of moonlight, starlight, firelight, and flashlight created a visual symphony that captured the scene and expressed the deeper emotions of that untouchable space.

A Turning Point in My Artistic Journey

Cosmic Life became a pivotal turning point in my journey as a photographer. It taught me that photography is not merely about capturing reality but about communicating emotions and forming a deeper connection with the world beyond what the eye can see.

In August 2023, the Lahaina fire took nearly everything—our home, decades of work, and thousands of rolls of film, each containing its own stories and moments that I had painstakingly captured over the years. Only a tiny fraction—maybe 2%—had been scanned and preserved. The rest of my meticulously stored and organized film archive was destroyed. The losses were immeasurable.

But in an unexpected twist of fate, one piece of film survived. Cosmic Life—the very image that marked a pivotal moment in my artistic journey—was the only film left intact. It was saved because my wife, in a last-minute act before fleeing, grabbed important papers from our safe. Among them was this slide transparency, now the only surviving piece of film from my career.

The Only Surviving Piece of Film from My Career

Now Available for the First Time in Years

My early works, including Cosmic Life, have not been available for purchase for years. Not because they lacked significance but because my artistic focus had shifted over time toward a softer, more subtle use of color. I had always planned to revisit these images later in my career, perhaps through a retrospective collection, to reflect on the journey they represent.

Now, for the first time in years, I’m offering this print—not just as a photograph, but as a symbol of survival and resilience. The only piece of film that remains is the image that shaped my growth as an artist. It serves as a reminder of the depth that photography can capture and the lasting impact of those moments, even in the face of unimaginable loss. I invite you to bring this special image into your space and share in its story.
